Johnny Depp says his next movie might be a porn film because he doesn't want to be typecast.
Depp, whose previous roles include Edward Scissorhands and Captain Jack Sparrow, has just played Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
He told German magazine Gala: "These kind of characters are not so far from my own personality, but I don't want to become typecast as an eccentric.
"Maybe next time I should do something totally different and film a cracking porn with Tim [Burton]. That would really send my popularity down to the depths!"
One of Depp's co-stars in the latest adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel, is 12-year-old German Philip Wiegratz, who plays greedy glutton Augustus Gloop.
Wiegratz said: "Johnny Depp is really nice and funny. He can even speak a little German. But all he knows how to say is: "Who's farted?"."

Hong Kong - Hollywood heart-throbs Johnny Depp and John Travolta will reportedly join singer Julie Andrews to help launch Disneyland's new theme park in Hong Kong next month.
Andrews has been appointed the official ambassador of Hong Kong Disneyland when the House of Mouse opens the gates of the $3.2bn project, its first such venture in Asia, on September 12, the Apple Daily paper said.
She famously played Mary Poppins in the classic children's fantasy movie of the same name.
Depp, starred in Disney films Pirates of the Caribbean and Finding Neverland, and Travolta featured in 1998's Oscar-nominated A Civil Action.
Apple Daily said all three would attend a glitzy, star-studded gala on the eve of the opening of the park, which Disney hopes will draw more than 5.5 million visitors annually.
Disney has run into some obstacles in the build-up to opening day, including complaints from environmentalists about shark-fin soup - since taken off the menu - and Disneyland's fabled nightly fireworks displays.

Johnny Depp was once on the road to nowhere fast. Not these days. He's earned two Oscar nominations in the past two years. He ranked seventh on this year's Forbes power list for actors, and he's scooping up US$35-million for simultaneously shooting Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3 over the next 10 months.
Not bad for a rebel actor who infamously trashed a New York hotel suite in 1994 on his way to becoming a promising, self-involved failure.
He can see clearly now, however. And the view from his home base in Paris is quite lovely, thank you, since he shares it with his wife, Vanessa Paradis, and their two children, Lily-Rose, 6, and Jack, 3.
Depp moved out of the Hollywood scene more than six years ago, to rid himself of his self-indulgent, substance-abusing lifestyle. Relocation did exactly that, and in the process gave him a new lease on life and the sort of movie career he never thought he would have -- a bankable box-office one.
"I mean, I never really thought about it much," says the 42-year-old, sporting a deep, dark tan from his Caribbean location for the filming of Pirates. "Someone mentioned something about some Forbes list or something, but it just made me laugh."
What his new status did, though, was more than he expected. It allowed him to re-team with friend and colleague Tim Burton when Burton was offered the job of directing the movie remake of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which opens Friday.
What a difference a few Depp hits make.
Fifteen years before, Burton, coming off his Batman success, had a difficult time getting approval to cast 21 Jump Street's Depp as the lead in Edward Scissorhands. Not now.
"It was the first time I didn't have to talk anyone into casting Johnny," says a smiling Burton, who also worked with Depp on 1994's Ed Wood and 1999's Sleepy Hollow. "In fact, before I could even open my mouth the studio goes, 'What about Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka?' I said, 'Well, OK. If you're going to force him on me, fine.' "
Less glib about casting decisions, Depp contends that he will be forever grateful to Burton for sticking by him when many had given up on him a decade ago.
"I know that over the years Tim's had to fight long, hard battles to allow me to be in a film because I wasn't particularly popular at various studios," admits Depp, whose 1990s box-office track record was considered weak.
So, armed with "a strong bond and a love and respect" for each other, Burton and Depp forged ahead with their movie translation of Dahl's caustic kids' book.
The plan was to be more loyal to the English writer's multi-layered social study than the 1971 film musical featuring Gene Wilder's madcap Wonka. However, both Depp and Burton decided the basics should remain the same:
Wonka, after a self-imposed isolation, opens his factory to a tour by contest winners -- five children who end up revealing themselves for what they are.
That includes, of course, Charlie (Finding Neverland's Freddie Highmore), the only poor child in the bunch, an innocent urchin with a disarming naivete.
Depp's Wonka shows a naivete, too, but he's not quite as disarming. And no, says Depp, there are no veiled Michael Jackson references included in his portrayal.
"When Tim and I talked about Wonka, there was no script," says Depp. "There was only Dahl's book for my notes, which was, in a lot of ways, a great gift."
The novella convinced the actor he should model Wonka's voice and behaviour after "guys like kids' show hosts Captain Kangaroo and Mister Rogers, who spoke in that kind of bizarre musical rhythm and cadence."
And the Prince Valiant haircut? All Depp. "I thought it would be kind of strange but right for him to have an almost Brian Jones bob," says the actor, referring to the haircut of the dearly departed member of the Rolling Stones.
Another Depp innovation: "Willy's references should be dated, like he locked himself in his room with a stack of Herman's Hermits records."
Not surprisingly, Burton agreed with Depp's Wonka ideas, "since we do share an absurd sense of humour."
And while Depp "knew it would be a risk to take it somewhere far away from the area that the brilliant Gene Wilder stomped on," he couldn't resist.
Just as he couldn't resist the temptation to fashion his Captain Jack in Pirates as a ragged Keith Richards, a trait so appropriate that Richards is scheduled to make a cameo in Pirates 2 as Jack's father.
"It's looking very, very good," says Depp of the Richards possibility. "I've talked to Keith about it, and he's been super sweet and keen to do it. And, boy, if that happens, talk about a dream come true."

Hollywood star JOHNNY DEPP is urging his daughter LILY-ROSE to become a painter even though she's just six years old.
The proud father surrounded his daughter with paint, canvases and brushes just six months after she was born, in a bid to inspire her to become an artist.
And he's keeping her childish sketches, because he's convinced they'll be valuable when she's a famous painter.
Depp enthuses, "If I had my wish, Lily-Rose would be a painter. That's why I'm keeping her sketches.
"When she was six months old, I held a paintbrush in her hand.
"By the time she was one, I was guiding her hand to paint with acrylics and also showed her how to keep her brushes clean.
"Now she's intrigued by pastels and is going through her 'purple phase'."

Bless Johnny Depp - he might possibly be the nicest guy on the planet.
The Pirates Of The Caribbean star has revealed that he's waiting for his long-term love Vanessa Paradis to ask him to marry her - but he's hesitant about marriage for one unselfish reason.
Johnny has admitted that he'd feel really bad about spoiling Vanessa's name.
"It would be a shame to ruin her last name! It's so perfect - Vanessa Paradis. So beautiful.
"It would be such a drag to stick her with Paradis-Depp. It's like a flat note," he confessed.
But apart from the name issue, the 41-year-old actor reckons that as far as he's concerned, they are as good as husband and wife, after their seven years and two children together.
"For all intents and purposes we are married. We have two kids together and she is the woman in my life.
"But if she ever said: 'Hey, let's get hitched', I would do it in a second," he said.
"We'll do it if the kids want us to, or maybe when the kids are old enough to enjoy it with us."

Johnny Depp is leading the race to portray Playboy boss Hugh Hefner in a new biopic about the magazine publisher's extraordinary life.
Top producer Brian Grazer is working on a script for the project at Universal and Hefner likes his choice for a lead.
He says, "We've got a first draft of the screenplay, they've talked about Johnny Depp as a possibility.
"The first order of business is to finish the script and get a good director on board. I like Johnny Depp."
Hefner admits he's sorry the film wasn't made 20 or 30 years ago because he'd have loved James Stewart or Henry Fonda to portray him.

Johnny Depp, who stars in director Tim Burton's upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, told SCI FI Wire that he actually did double duty with Burton in London during filming. While shooting Charlie, based on Roald Dahl's beloved children's book, Depp was also voicing the character of Victor in Burton's stop-motion animated movie Corpse Bride.
"Yeah, it was very interesting," Depp said in a news conference in Nassau, Bahamas, over the weekend, where he is currently shooting the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel films. "We were just about to start [Charlie], and Tim came to me and said, 'You know, I've got this other thing that I'm thinking about doing. This stop-motion thing. And, you know, I'd like to give you the script and take a look and tell me what you think.' [I said,] 'Sure.' So I read the script [and] felt, 'God, it was amazing. It's amazing. It's brilliant.' But I had no idea he was going to be doing them simultaneously. I mean, he was literally leaving the set of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and going into the Corpse Bride ... recordings and animation [sessions]. ... It was an incredible energy he has."
For his part, Depp would record his voice part for Corpse during breaks from Charlie, in which he plays reclusive candy mogul Willy Wonka. "For me, it was like, you know, going from [assumes Willy Wonka voice] playing Willy Wonka, and then, suddenly, [taking on victor's wispy English accent], you know, going in and deciding to be Victor," he said. "It was a really strange thing. Because I would literally leave the stage playing Wonka and then ... have to find this other character on the walk to the studio. Anything with Tim is always just a blast, you know? Always."
But Depp said that he loves working with Burton, which whom he has previously made Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and Ed Wood. "I know that I respect him so much and love him so much as a filmmaker," Depp said. "I would do anything he wanted. ... The thing I most enjoy about our relationship, aside from our friendship, is the amount of trust, you know? And the amount of trust that goes into that process, that collaborative process. Because one minute we're talking very, very deeply about Captain Kangaroo, and the next minute we're doing impersonations of, you know, Sammy Davis Jr. and Charles Nelson Reilly and you know. So it can go anywhere, you know?"
Depp added that the two also share a kind of offbeat sensibility. "One of the things I think Tim and I share is a kind of fascination with people, with human beings, you know?" he said. "The human animal. And I think we share also the idea, you know, that most people in life—most people, especially the ones that are considered, you know, super normal—if you really take a step back and observe them, watch them a bit, you'll realize that they're actually completely out of their mind, you know? Most people are really nuts. And that's fascinating to watch, you know? And I think Tim feels the same way [chuckles]." Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opens July 15.

Johnny Depp, who plays Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, told SCI FI Wire that he was not concerned that some viewers may see a resemblance between his reculsive candy mogul and Michael Jackson. "It doesn't bother me," Depp said in a news conference in Nassau, Bahamas. "I mean, everybody's entitled to think what they want, even while being violently wrong. [chuckle] No, you know, the weird thing is, that actually never occurred to me that there would be any kind of potential connection to Michael Jackson. It never entered my mind. And I still don't understand it."
In Burton's new adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's book, Depp plays Wonka with a high, soft voice, a pale face and fluttery gestures. He admitted that some people might get the wrong idea as a result. "I mean, I guess you can on one level: the sort of the makeup and children and ... fantasy-land kind of thing," he said. "But, yeah, it seems weird to me, you know? I would say, if there was anyone you'd want to compare it to, it would be like a Howard Hughes, almost, you know? Like, a reclusive ... germophobe, controlling kind of [guy].
Depp said the inspiration for his version of Wonka, previously played by Gene Wilder, was quite different. "On this film, with Willy Wonka, it wasn't specifically any one or two guys that were models, so to speak, for the character," Depp said. "But there were memories that I have of when I was a little kid watching, like, children's shows and children's show hosts. And I distinctly remember, even at that age, thinking: Their speech pattern and the kind of musical quality of the way they're speaking to the camera and to the children, I thought then it was really strange. Even then, I thought it was super bizarre, because it was always: [assumes artificial voice] 'Hello, children. How are you?' You know? That kind of thing.
"So, ... like, guys that I watched, Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers and Uncle Al and all these guys, became the main part of the ingredient," Depp added. "And then also, like, gameshow hosts that I remember seeing and watching and thinking, you know, My God, they can't be like that at home, you know? They can't actually be like that. ... Which sort of led me to believe that they put on a mask, you know, in a way. So it was that kind of ... all-important, positive smile. And so that was the other side of Wonka." Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opens July 15.

Actor Johnny Depp tells Newsweek that he was stunned when director Tim Burton, with whom he's made several movies, asked him to play Willy Wonka in his version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." "Tim and I have had this long relationship, and he's fought some brave and noble battles [to cast Depp in his movies], but I didn't think they would ever come to me for a project this size," Depp says. "I was ecstatic, man. I was doing Snoopy dances."
Depp, after years of being a critical darling but a box-office deadbeat, had suddenly become bankable after the success of "Pirates of the Caribbean." "It was the first time I didn't have to talk a studio into him," Burton says. "It was like he'd landed on the planet for the first time! He's been doing f---ing great work for years, but...whatever. I guess it's all box office for them."
Depp tells Newsweek Senior Writer Sean Smith in the current issue that the hardest part of playing Wonka in the film version of Roald Dahl's classic children's story was trying to erase any memory he had of the 1971 film with Gene Wilder. "And then you go, 'Christ, I can't erase it, so I'll just have to make a very, very sharp left turn'." When asked about competing with the 1971 version, Burton tells Smith, "People want to pit the two movies against each other and turn this into 'Celebrity Deathmatch.' Like we're wiping out three generations of childhood memories. It's not like we're burning DVDs of the old movie. Anybody who loves it can watch it."
Dahl's widow, Liccy, had been intrigued by the thought of casting Daniel Day-Lewis or Kevin Spacey, Smith reports in the July 4 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, June 27). She tells Smith that she is thrilled with the film and says her late husband "would have adored it." She's happy with Depp's performance, too, although she admits she doesn't quite understand the actor's sex appeal. "Women just adore him, don't they?" she says. "I have to be honest, I think he's a little too pretty. Terribly nice, but he's no Robert Mitchum."
Depp talks to Smith about the success of 2003's "Pirates" which took in $652 million worldwide. "I had never experienced anything like that -- where you meet a 75-year-old woman who had seen 'Pirates' and somehow related to the character, and then five minutes later you meet a 6-year-old who says, 'Oh, you're Captain Jack!' What a rush. What a gift. That's the challenge with Wonka, too -- to be, in a sense, like Bugs Bunny. I find it magical that a 3- year-old can be mesmerized by Bugs, but so can a 40-year-old or an 80-year- old. It's a great challenge to see if you can appeal to that huge an age range."
For this film, Burton and Depp chose to give Wonka a backstory, making him the son of a dentist, who -- because he never got to eat sweets -- became estranged from his father and obsessed with candy. Over the years, Wonka has become not just reclusive, but almost autistic in his inability to connect with others. "He's not a father figure -- he's a mess," Burton says. "There are lots of people who are geniuses in one area, but have complete deficiencies in other areas of their lives."

Johnny Depp, who reprises the character of Captain Jack Sparrow in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, told SCI FI Wire that he and director Gore Verbinski are still trying to schedule scenes with Rolling Stones rock star Keith Richards, who will play Sparrow's father, but that it looks promising. "It looks like it's going to happen," Depp told reporters at a news conference in Nassau, Bahamas, where the films are shooting. "But I don't know when. It's all going to depend on where we are and where he is, because he's got a little thing called the Rolling Stones tour to do." Depp also confirmed that the first sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, took an early hiatus because a key cast member fell ill. "We've been shooting Pirates 2 for, well, it's been a few months ... now," Depp said on June 26. "And we had a hiatus that was planned; actually, probably it was supposed to start ... tomorrow or the next day. And we went into the hiatus a bit early, because there were bits that we were going to shoot up in Grand Bahama [for which] sets and stuff weren't ready. But more than that, one of ... our actors, one of our main guys, Kevin McNally, who plays Gibbs, ended up with a really nasty ear infection in both ears, and he was in England and ... was unable to get on a plane. So they just weighed out all the options and said, 'We'll just break now. Go on hiatus. And when we start up again, we'll finish up the bit from 2.'" Verbinski will shoot the first and second sequels back to back. Dead Man's Chest reunites the cast from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, including Depp, Orlando Bloom (Will Turner) and Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Swann), and adds Bill Nighy as the ghostly Davy Jones. Depp met with reporters to promote his upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it was clear he had transitioned into full pirate mode: He sported a scraggly beard, gold-capped teeth and a tattoo with the name "Jack" and the image of a sparrow against a sunrise on his right forearm. But Depp said it was a pleasure returning to the franchise. "It's weird," he said. "We didn't quite know what to expect before we went back into ... Pirates 2. A lot of things happened. ... Orlando's, you know, [in] these big movies. And Keira, you know, all this stuff. And everybody's all over the map. And so we didn't quite know what to expect. And Gore, obviously, Gore's been working like a demon. But honestly, we stepped on the set the first day, and it was like, for me, jumping back into the skin of Captain Jack. ... It felt like we'd had a week off, you know, from the first one. And it's been a really great time, you know? Everybody's been super good and fun, and I think it's going to be good. I hope. I'll knock wood again."

How is it shooting two films at the same time?

Johnny Depp: Well, it's a lengthy process. It's going to take us a while.

Over 9 months?

JD: Maybe more.

Are you shooting the films back to back?

JD: As much as we can, we are doing two, and every now and then, you may have to slot something in from "Pirates 3", but the majority of what we have done so far have been 2 and then we will start moving into 3 after the hiatus. It's been great fun so far.

Why did you choose to revisit the role of Captain Jack?

JD: For me, there was only reason and one reason only, it was Captain Jack. It was selfishly to have the opportunity to play Captain Jack again. Some people can look at it and say, "Depp sold out." I don't believe that I have. It certainly wasn't my attention to sell out but I wanted to play again because I think he's so much fun to play and I think there is so much more to explore with that character that I would keep going. If they wanted me to do "Pirate 7", why not?

What will we see this time around?

JD: In "Pirates 2 & 3", you will get to see a couple of new layers to Captain Jack. You will get to see him in new situations; situations that he is unable to talk his way out of. There's a lot of fun stuff.

Will Keith Richards be in the film?

JD: It's looking very good. I've talk to Keith about it and he's been super sweet and keen to do it and it's looking very good. We are just hoping that we can work out the dates with the Stones tour and everything but if that happens, you talk about a dream come true. Get to be a pirate with Keith Richards? Does it get better than that?

For years he seemed dead set on being anything other than a movie star, playing so many offbeat characters in so many offbeat movies that he practically became his own genre. Between 1989 and 1998, not a single Johnny Depp film grossed more than $55 million domestically. But two summers ago, "Pirates of the Caribbean" plundered $652 million worldwide, and Depp suddenly became Hollywood's hottest "new" leading man. He spoke to NEWSWEEK's Sean Smith.

Smith: 1. You've been in the Bahamas shooting two sequels to "Pirates of the Caribbean." How's that going?
Johnny: You know, quite a bit of traveling and a lot of swashbuckling. But it's good for a man to buckle his swash every now and then.

2. When you made the first "Pirates," your performance worried studio executives. That happened again when Warner Bros. first saw you as Willy Wonka. What gives?
At the beginning of the shoot we weren't getting phone calls from the studio that said, "We're freaked out." And that freaked me out. It's important to try something new each time out of the gate. So I'm kind of glad they were freaked out.

3. What was the hardest part about figuring out how you were going to play such an iconic character?
Early on, the hardest part was trying to erase any memory I had of the 1971 film with Gene Wilder. And then you go, "Christ, I can't erase it, so I'll just have to make a very, very sharp left turn."

4. You and director Tim Burton have made several movies together. Did you assume he'd ask you to play Wonka?
I was stunned. Tim and I have had this long relationship, and he's fought some brave and noble battles [to cast Depp in his movies], but I didn't think they would ever come to me for a project this size. I was ecstatic, man. I was doing Snoopy dances.

5. But after the success of "Pirates," why wouldn't the studio want you for this?
That didn't even cross my mind. I just don't think in those terms, you know? I'm so used to living the way I've been living—I do what I do, and people get it or they don't. All the little films I've done that were perceived by Hollywood as these obscure, weird things, I always thought could appeal to a larger audience. I mean, box office is such a mystery to me that I can't... you know... I have enough —trouble doing my own gig.

6. Still, it must have felt good to have your work seen and loved by so many people.
I had never experienced anything like that—where you meet a 75-year-old woman who had seen "Pirates" and somehow related to the character, and then five minutes later you meet a 6-year-old who says, "Oh, you're Captain Jack!" What a rush. What a gift. That's the challenge with Wonka, too—to be, in a sense, like Bugs Bunny. I find it magical that a 3-year-old can be mesmerized by Bugs, but so can a 40-year-old or an 80-year-old. It's a great challenge to see if you can appeal to that huge an age range.

7. Years ago, when you first became famous on the TV show "21 Jump Street," Hollywood wanted to make you into the next pretty-boy star, and you rebelled.
I was not a dummy. That show put me on the map, and I realized the opportunity that I had been given, but I couldn't... I just couldn't be what they wanted me to be. It ran against every cell in my body. It was killing me. I had to say, "F—- it. I'm going to go in this direction, and if I fail, I fail."

8. Since you and Tim have been friends for so many years, I'd imagine that the two of you must be able to complete each other's sentences.
Oh, yeah. Tim will say, "And then we went, and there was that, you know, whatever, so what could I do?" And I go, "Yeah, I know exactly what you mean." [Laughs]

9. When you're working together, do you ever think, "This is too weird, even for us"?
Definitely. Things get weirder and weirder, then one of you says, "Let's try that!" And then you look at each other and go, "I don't know, man, maybe not."

10. Did your kids come to the "Charlie" set?
They went crazy. They tried on the hat and the glasses and wanted to play with the candy cane. They loved seeing the giant chocolate waterfall. Every day it felt like walking onto the set of "The Wizard of Oz."

11. Has the studio talked to you about doing "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator"?
No, but it should be done. There's a lot more fun stuff in there, and I'm certainly game.

If director Ashvin Kumar has his way, Hollywood hunk Johnny Depp could soon be serenading an Indian actress in the backwaters of Kerala.
Fresh after the worldwide success of Little Terrorist, Kumar plans to rope in his favourite actor Depp, known for his Oscar-nominated roles in Pirates of the Caribbean and Finding Neverland, for a romantic comedy shot in god's own country.
"I am trying to get Johnny Depp to act in a movie set in Kerala," Kumar told PTI in an interview.
The 30-something director hit the headlines earlier this year when his 15-minute movie Little Terrorist based on the real-life incident of a Pakistani boy straying into Indian territory - was nominated for an Oscar in the live action short films category.

It seems Johnny Depp won't be asking "Why is all the rum gone?" in his next film as he will be drinking and carousing in Puerto Rico in the late 1950s as he will once again play the nutty journalist Hunter S. Thompson in The Rum Diary for writer/director Bruce Robinson.
Depp played Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and it seems he had a certain desire to work with Robinson on several occasions as producer Anthony Rhulen tells Variety, "Johnny had tried to hire Bruce four times and this was the first thing he accepted... Johnny is working hands on with Bruce to develop his character, and we'll worry about the rest of the cast later. So many talented actors are fans of Hunter that that part should be relatively easy."
The film will be financed by FilmEngine who hope to get production underway sometime shortly after Depp finishes the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean sequels.
